In 1926, Villa Sous Tous Vent was conceived as a place of light, shelter and retreat. Designed by the Ghent-based architect Valentin Vaerwyck and commissioned by the painter Albert Saverys, one of the defining figures of Belgian modernism, the house was conceived as a place where his artistic practice and domestic life could intertwine. His work, marked by a distinctive sensitivity to light, atmosphere and the coastal landscape, found its counterpart in the villa’s architecture. Within these walls, Saverys cultivated a practice rooted in observation and quietude, qualities that continue to resonate in the house today.

Nearly a century later, the villa enters a new chapter, one that does not seek to overwrite its past, but to honour and extend it. This approach lies at the heart of Maison Osaïn’s philosophy: a holistic vision of living that brings together heritage, craftsmanship, nature and sensory experience. Founded in 2022 by architect Thomas Maria Verschuren and designer Ann Butaye, Maison Osaïn emerged from a commitment to living with intention, care and meaningful design. Their work is guided by the conviction that a home should not merely function, but nourish – offering space for stillness, contemplation and renewal.

In the renovation of this listed monument, Maison Osaïn sought a dialogue between past and present. The original architecture is treated with restraint and respect, while contemporary interventions introduce lightness, tactility and calm. Natural materials – stone, wood, mineral surfaces – form a coherent palette throughout, while restrained tones allow light to shape the atmosphere as the day unfolds. The house’s proportions, openings and thresholds are carefully articulated, creating fluid transitions between interior and exterior and inviting each season to register its presence within. The result is an environment of understated luxury, defined by material depth, tactility and quietude. In subtle ways, the renovation honours Saverys’ artistic sensibility: his attention to nuance, his understanding of light as both subject and medium.

The landscape surrounding the villa plays an equally vital role. Designed by Piet Oudolf, whose work is renowned for its poetic balance between structure and spontaneity, the garden extends the villa’s dialogue with time and nature. Planting follows the rhythms of growth and rest, creating a living composition that shifts with the seasons, echoing both the architecture’s measured calm and Saverys’ sustained attention to light and landscape. Here, nature appears not as ornament but as living movement – shifting, seasonal, alive.

Art forms a final, essential layer. For the art curation, Maison Osaïn collaborates with KALPA (website · instagram), a contemporary art gallery and consultancy company founded by Olga Niescier and based in the ancient town of Volterra, Tuscany.

A carefully chosen selection from their collection of contemporary paintings, bas-reliefs and sculptures is woven into the house with great care as points of resonance. Each work contributes to an atmosphere of contemplation, revealing the villa as a place where architecture, art and lived experience converge.
